Frequently Asked Questions About Combined Degrees
What is a combined degree program?
Some colleges and universities will allow you to complete your bachelors and masters degree combined, as part of a single, continuous program, sometimes known as a 4+1 program. A combined degree program bundles two related degrees, such as a bachelor of science in project management and a master of science in project management, and allows for a significant amount of carryover between undergraduate and graduate credit requirements, so that the two degrees can be completed in five total years of study, rather than the typical six. Time is money, and the total cost of a bachelor and master degree combined is less than that of a bachelor degree and masters degree earned on their own.
Though combined degree programs are sometimes referred to as accelerated degree programs, these are generally not the same thing. A combined degree program consists of a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree bundled together in a single, continuous course of study. Both combined degree programs and accelerated degree programs can also be completed online. Completing accelerated degree programs online typically refers to online bachelors degree programs that take three years or less, and online masters degrees that take 18 months or less. These options are, however, still separate degree programs.
A combined degree program should also not be confused with a double major. As a double major, you would complete two majors as part of a single degree, such as a bachelor of arts in English and philosophy.
Can I get my bachelors and masters at the same time?
Because master’s degree programs require students to hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree for admission, it’s not possible to earn a bachelors and masters degree at exactly the same time (in the sense of completing coursework for each simultaneously). However, completing a combined degree program — or 4+1 program — allows you to get as close as possible. Because 4+1 programs allow for some bachelor degree coursework to count toward masters degree requirements, they minimize the total time and cost of earning both degrees. If you are set on going straight from undergraduate to graduate studies, bundling your bachelors and masters into a single 4+1 program can be the most efficient and affordable route to personal and professional advancement.
How long does it take to earn a bachelor’s degree?
Earning a bachelor degree, whether on-campus or online, typically takes four years of study and coursework. Because a bachelor degree is required for earning a masters degree, the journey from first-year freshman to post-graduate can be a long one, taking a minimum of six years of study if done without any gaps. Earning a bachelor and master degree combined in a single 4+1 program provides a beneficial alternative to the classic model of earning each degree separately.
How long does it take to earn a master’s degree?
A masters degree usually takes two years of study to complete, though sometimes it can take three (depending on the specific field and degree requirements). A combined degree program, or even a program that allows you to earn combined bachelors and masters degree online, can shave a year off your total studies, and get you to the goal line that much faster.
How much does a master’s degree cost?
The cost of a masters degree can vary significantly, from around $10K a year at a public school, to upwards of $60K at a renowned private college. When combined with the cost of the bachelor degree that you’ll need to get into a masters degree program, a complete education through the graduate level can quickly approach the six-figure mark. By contrast, if you know that you want to earn a bachelor degree and a master degree in the same field, combining programs can help cut the cost of your total educational experience. Online degree programs offer even more savings for students, and earning a combined bachelors and masters degree online can give you the education you need in the most affordable package.
